Curiosity and The Computer Room

There have been so many times in my life that I wish access to efficiency didn’t exist the way it does now. Remember as a kid, walking into your family's computer room when you had a burning question on your mind? Like an itch needing to be scratched. “Where do dreams come from?” I know I have looked that up before, and maybe you have too. Turning on the computer and monitor, pulling up the desk chair, waiting for the screen to power up and taking in the hum of the computer as it processes. And the waiting… waiting for the computer to turn on, waiting for the internet to load…having Yahoo come up as the default engine, and immediately going into typing “Google” to switch over (lol). And then searching for that random question that sparked curiosity in your little soul, scrolling down the main page and searching for a link that seems promising. The entire process of satisfying your curiosity was a ritual. And one we didn’t realize the importance of during those moments. And now, everything moves so quickly. If you want the answer to something, it’s immediately yours. And I can’t always complain, the feeling is nice to instantly have what you’re searching for. But with that, you lose something that might be more significant. The micro moments of boredom, of noticing, and threads of silence that leave you feeling even more whole than you could’ve known before the ritual. And I knew that for me, the ritual is worth giving up some of that convenience. And I didn't fully understand the world I entered when I recreated my own version of the “computer room” here and now, in 2026. I bought the monitor, the keyboard, the mouse… and although it isn’t the same as it was all those years ago, I’ve experienced a feeling that I believed was irreplicable. And it kinda felt like returning home.
